Human beings naturally discriminate, and in doing so we obscure or ignore aspects of life that are not within our experience. Three aspects we seek to explore and experience within Soto Zen practice are the spirituality of the feminine, the unfabricated purity of mind of children, and body awareness.
Great Tree is a residential Zen temple for women, providing an environment of mutual understanding and support for a uniquely feminine expression of spiritual practice.
Sesshins (meditation retreats), workshops, and study classes on various aspects of Buddhist teachings will be open to everyone. Family practice and body awareness classes will also be available.
Great Tree willl offer six sesshins each year and two residential practice periods. Non-residents can participate in modified practice periods through their local meditation communities.
The long-term vision for Great Tree includes offering assisted living arrangements for older women and women with physical limitations. Great Tree will offer a new perspective on the practice of Soto Zen Buddhism.
